Title: Intro Meiosis

Grade Level:10

Course:Biology

Lesson Overview

This lesson will give the students an introduction to meiosis. They will have to use prior knowledge of mitosis and replication to understand meiosis. They have already had an in depth unit on mitosis. I will have to bring out that the only difference between the two is during prophase 1 there is a crossing over stage, and also the cell goes through a second division that ends up with four haploid cells.

Learning Performances

Students should be able to understand and explain each step of meiosis and also explain the difference between meiosis and mitosis.

This is a one period introduction that should take about 40 minutes

Instructional Sequence

Introducing the lesson

I will start with a starting activity on the board for the students to do right form the start. They will be working in groups to think and pull ideas from each other. They will have to put their group ideas on the board and explain.

Instructional Activities

I will have an activity on the board that will bring out their prior knowledge. They will have to draw out and explain mitosis. This is information that I have already taught them and should know. They have done a whole unit on mitosis with labs. I will go over all the steps with the students to make sure they still know this information. After this I will explain in words what meiosis is. I will tell them that is is used in making gametes and that it only has half the information. Since it only has half the genetic information they will have to conclude that meiosis makes four cells with half the chromosomes. I will state that it is just like going through mitosis twice and that it is used in/for sexual reproduction. Then I shall break the students into groups where they will have to think about what i had just taught them and draw out all the steps. They will have to think about how mitosis and meiosis are different and how they are similar and what each is used for. Since meiosis is used in passing of genetic traits and that half come from your mother and half comes from your father then at the end of the second division there should be half the number of chromosomes at the last step. Each group will have to draw their ideas on the board and explain their thought process to the class. I can have the students vote on which group they think is correct and then I will explain the whole process and go through and explain on any misconceptions that the students had come up with during their thinking process. When I am done I will give a hand out going through all the steps.

Concluding the Lesson

I will bring the class back together and reinforce the purpose of the lesson with a handout where they will be able to see the proper steps and what goes on inside each cell at each step. I will explain that through meiosis this is how genes and traits are passed on from generation to generation through sexual reproduction. The main idea is to introduce meiosis to the students and have them use prior knowledge to understand the concept.

Assessing Student Understanding

They will have a homework assignment that will have to do with meiosis that will be gone over in detail to assure that all students understand the concept at hand.
C
autions
There are no precautions that need to be taken in this lesson.

Rationale
The students will learn all the different steps of meiosis. Since they will have a strong previous background of cell division and mitosis, this is what I will use to teach meiosis which is very closely related. Then in the next classes I can really focus on the differences. With the students working in the groups it will bring out discussion and the students will learn from each other.
